The Colombian capital market began to develop during the first decades of the twentieth century, as a result of the movement of capitals that were needed to improve the modernization of important sectors of the national economy as a step towards industrialization. Additionally, the progress and growth of the financial sector led to the creation of a scenario in which the values were publicly traded but in a controlled manner.
The first stock exchange market to be established was La Bolsa de Bogotá, whose first round was registered in 1929. Later, in the year 1961 and 1983, La Bolsa de Medellín and La Bolsa de Occidente S.A. were created respectively.
With the advent of the twenty-first century, the current Stock Exchange Market called Bolsa de Valores de Colombia – BVC - was consolidated in July 2001, as a result of the integration of the preceding stock exchanges of Bogotá, Medellin and Occidente, retaining all brokerage firms attached to each of the previous stocks as integrated entities authorized to operate in the new stock market.
Currently, the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia (BVC) has offices in Bogotá, Medellin and Cali, and features a unified platform where shares and derivatives can be traded, and the foreign exchange and the fixed income markets are managed.
